Skal dit barn på efterskole?

Et ophold på en efterskole kan være en stor gevinst for både barnet og forældrene. Det kan selvfølgelig være hårdt at sende sit barn afsted, men hvis du er klar til at give slip, kan du og din teenager få meget godt igen.

For mange unge er det en stor omvæltning at tage et år på efterskole. De er nødt til at lære nye mennesker at kende og være åbne for, at hverdagen foregår på en anden måde end derhjemme. Måske skal der også hjælpes mere til, end de er vant til. Samtidig bliver efterskoletiden et uforglemmeligt år. Man glemmer ikke sådan lige den tid, hvor man for første gang stod på egne ben og lærte at tage ansvar for sig selv og for de andre i fællesskabet.

 

Efterskoleopholdet er et år uden forældrene og den kendte vennekreds. Det giver god mulighed for at sætte gang i den personlige udvikling hos den unge. Hvis der er begyndende kurrer på tråden derhjemme eller problemer med generthed eller en begrænset vennekreds, så er efterskolen en god mulighed for at få en frisk start og en pause hjemmefra.

 

På en efterskole er det muligt for barnet at finde nye venner med samme interesser og som også har taget springet og står alene på den første skoledag. Undervejs har barnet mulighed for at tage kontakt til dygtige og engagerede lærere eller en kontaktperson, hvis der opstår udfordringer eller det hele i starten bliver lidt overvældende og skræmmende.

Overvældende og skræmmende kan det også være for forældrene at skulle sige farvel i et år. Barnet kommer jo hjem på weekend. Men det kan godt føles lidt tomt at sende sin søn eller datter væk hjemmefra. Der sker meget på et år, og en del af udviklingen er du ikke længere med til at præge i samme grad, som du er vant til. Til gengæld får du et barn hjem, som er ved at blive et ungt menneske, og som står stærkere og mere modent, end da I tog afsked.

 

Hvordan vælger man den rigtige efterskole?

Danmark har et stort udvalg af efterskoler, som hver især har forskellige profiler. Det vigtigste er, at barnet føler sig godt hjemme og glæder sig til hverdagen på skolen og de fag, som tilbydes. Men som forældre kan du hjælpe med råd og vejledning samt med at vurdere skolen, fagene og de ansatte.

 

Spørg ind til skolens værdier og faglige niveau. Og fortæl, hvis barnet har udfordringer fagligt eller socialt. Så får skolen bedre forudsætninger for at give dit barn det bedste og mest udviklende år.
